Jen Beagin’s debut novel PRETEND I’M DEAD (Scribner, on-sale May 15, 2018) – is a bold, surprising, and wonderfully strange story focusing on a mesmerizing and unexpected character, Mona – a 24 year old cleaning houses in Massachusetts.

Mona has an impeccable “dirt radar” – she’s almost drawn to the grimy, the unwanted, and the taboo. While working as a volunteer swapping drug addicts’ dirty needles for clean ones, she falls madly in love with a recipient she calls Mr. Disgusting. They are perfect for each other. She collects vintage vacuums; he collects items he finds in the trash. She snoops around her client’s houses; he snoops in gardens stealing flowers for money. She has baggage with her alcoholic one-armed father; he is twice her age with a crippling drug addiction and will break her heart.

PRETEND I’M DEAD follows Mona’s journey from Massachusetts to the desert of Taos, New Mexico where she relocates hoping to find a fresh start. Instead she finds a community of misfits who just might be as miserable as she is. As she cleans the home of a divorced man with a twelve year old daughter, the apartment of a woman who collects angel paraphernalia, and the trailer of a hoarding psychic living in the middle of the desert, she unearths her repressed and haunting childhood memories and must shed her passivity towards life to come to terms with her past.

Smart, refreshing, and deeply moving, PRETEND I’M DEAD is a book that will stay with you long after you’ve turned the last page, and Mona is character you will truly never forget. I hope you will consider for May coverage.

Jen Beagin holds an MFA in creative writing from the University of California, Irvine, and is a recipient of a 2017 Whiting Award in fiction. Pretend I’m Dead is her first novel. A former cleaning lady, she lives in Hudson, New York.
